I admit I have a hard time buying typical kid’s music for my 2-year-old son, so when I came across Bloodshot Records’ compilation, The Bottle Let Me Down: Songs for Bumpy Wagon Rides, I was intrigued. The cover alone made me laugh out loud. Could it be possible to find a kid’s album that didn’t make me want to shove ice picks into my ears? Yes, indeed!
For fans of alt-country, you won’t be disappointed. Notable names such as Kelly Hogan, the Asylum Street Spankers and the Waco Brothers get you laughing and dancing along with your kids. The “Rockabilly Filly” Rosie Flores adds her sweet vocals to the classic “Red Red Robin,” while Robbie Fulks’ dark-humored “Godfrey” weaves a gloomy, albeit amusing, tale of a “sickly, unemployed amateur children’s musician.”
Other highlights include the rollicking “Hinky Dinky Dee” by One Riot One Ranger, classic kids’ tune “Three Little Fishes” by Jon Rauhouse and Andy Hopkins, and a great little ditty about getting older, “Sad and Dreamy (The Big 1-0)” by Alejandro Escovedo.
This album is meant to tickle your funny bone and remind you not to take yourself too seriously. Think trucker tunes meets nursery rhymes, with a dash of sass and sarcasm thrown in for good measure, and you’ve got yourself a great recipe for toddler tunes that even Mom and Pop can enjoy.
