“Babies are not sweet. Babies are not precious. Babies are not cute …” so says big sister Sophie Peterman.
In Sarah Weeks’ book, Sophie Peterman Tells the Truth!, Sophie tells it like it is when dealing with a new sibling, and does so with colorful, bold photos filling the entire page and text that gets larger, the more frustrated she becomes.
This book illustrates the different stages of coping children go through when being introduced to another baby in the family and could be an eye opener for parents as to what to expect.
The story is humorous and Sophie’s description of her new baby brother is spot on, with a little adult humor hidden within the text. She compares babies to aliens because they have “big eyes, bald heads and make strange noises.” He steals her Halloween candy and “leaks” when she tries to pick him up.
The book is full of surprises and will have both parents and children laughing out loud, especially when Sophie finds her lucky marble her brother swallowed in the most disconcerting way.
Weeks ends the book in a positive light, with Sophie realizing she “might actually like him,” letting children and parents know everything will work out — eventually.
