A Cow Says Moock, by Alastair Moock

My daughter asks for the CD of “her friends,” as she calls them, singing nursery rhymes every single time we get in the car, so I needed something that would entertain her and not drive me batty. Thank God for Boston-based singer/songwriter Alastair Moock.

A Cow Says Moock was inspired by Moock’s twin daughters so it contains a lot of silliness, which makes it a lot of fun to dance to, even in a car seat. “Spaghetti in My Shoe” and “Two Little Babies (Dance Around)” are my girl’s favorites.

Moock also touches on contemporary topics. “Two Mommies” teaches tolerance for different types of families. “Some kids have got two mommies/And that’s all right by me,” Moock sings, and my daughter has quickly absorbed the message.

Moock’s voice is gravely and avuncular, which goes perfectly with the folk vibe of the CD. The covers on the record mine the Great American Songbook with classics like Woody Guthrie’s “Ship in the Sky,” Leadbelly’s “Rock Island Line,” Taj Mahal’s “Fishin’ Blues,”’ and Mississippi John Hurt’s “Chicken.”

A Cow Says Moock makes a great addition to the playlist for your summer travels.
