My name is Keller …

Keller Williams has been playing the jamband festival circuit for years, entertaining neo-hippies with his one-man band shows full of looping effects and electro-folk funk-grass. Williams has always felt his adult music was simple enough for children to appreciate, but he wanted to try his hand at a record intended for kids and one that parents would enjoy.

That record is Kids, released in 2010 and featuring plenty of goofy fun, danceable beats, flights of imagination, and a few baby goats. Williams plays all instruments on the album and wrote most of the songs, including a few collaborations with his own kids. There’s also a bouncy cover of the John Denver hit “Grandmother’s Feather Bed.” Grownups and kids will both giggle at songs about bodily noises (“Mama Tooted”), stinky feet (“Taking a Bath”), and nose picking (“Good Advice”).

There are more sophisticated messages, like how to get along with your neighbors (“My Neighbor is Happy Again”), working out family squabbles (“Because I Said So”), and the power of imagination (“Car Seat”). But “Hulahoop to da Loop” and “Soakie Von Soakerman” are all about the groove. There are bluegrass influences, as well as some fancy guitar work, but when Williams and his daughter gleefully duet on a simple ditty that goes faster and faster, it reminds us just how fun it can be just to sing along with your kids.
