DidiPop is Deborah Poppink, a children’s singer and songwriter from California whose 2010 CD Didi Pop Goes to Hawaii was inspired by a trip to Maui with her Hawaiian-born husband and two daughters.
The album is a literal travelog, starting with a cab ride to the airport and the flight “into the big blue sky/Up above the clouds” in the opening track “Wowie Gazowie (Goin’ to Maui).” At the beach hotel they learn to swim in Kapalua Bay, eat shaved ice, meet people from all over the world, and learn all about the Hawaiian language and culture.
Hearing about someone else’s vacation, especially someone you don’t even know, could be a total bore, but Didi makes you feel like part of the adventure with her chirpy vocals, clever songwriting and expert use of Hawaiian instrumentation.
The “Hawaiian Alphabet Song” recently won the John Lennon Song Writing Contest in the children’s category, and its catchy chant had my 4-year-old singing “humu humu nuku nuku apu aa” (the Hawaiian word for trigger fish, dontcha know) in no time. Kids learn lots of other Hawaiian words in “The Keiki Hula,” which wouldn’t sound out of place on mom and dad’s ’60s exotica mixtape.
Not all of the songs need be educational, though. “I Like Pigs” is a silly ditty about a common animal seen in the yards of the locals, and “Hop-a-loo” is just an excuse to jump on the hotel beds. “Coconut Candy” tells the tale of Lucy the fire dog, who learns a lesson from Red the Goose about not sitting under the coconut tree (“You gotta be nuts to sit under the coconut tree”).
DidiPop also takes kids along for a ride on the “Sugar Cane Train,” celebrates the cuteness of a “Mango,” and tells the tale of two lover birds in “Way Up High,” before sending us out with a surf instrumental (“Cowabunga”) and a wind down song about “Going Home.”
The only bad thing about this album, however, is now my kid wants to go to Hawaii.
