Back to School bash to end the summer

Summer is coming to an end. Parents may be celebrating, and students may be whining.

But maybe they should be Laughing. Pizza, that is.

The Atlanta family band Laughing Pizza — made up of dad Billy, mom Lisa and daughter Emily — plays a Back to School bash at Stone Mountain Park Saturday and Sunday, July 28-29.

“The fun thing about it is that it’s three shows a day,” Lisa Pizza says. “We’ve got some die-hard fans who are making a weekend of it camping out. It’s part of the crowd that we serve, those ages 4 to 9 who want it again and again. They want the same show every time.” The shows are at 1:30, 3:30 and 5 p.m. at The Magnolia.

Crowd favorites are “Rock Girl,” which is Emily’s song, and “Pizza Party,” which has its own dance.

“Stone Mountain was where we saw grandparents and even a woman with a walker stand up and do the Pizza Dance,” Lisa says about the first event they held at the park for spring break.

Laughing Pizza performs at home four to five times a year. “Up until a month ago, the longest stretch we would have was two weeks at home,” Lisa says. “We would come back for a show and laundry and a dentist appointment and then we’d be gone.”

Back out on the road in their Pizza Mobile, the band performs all over the country, but admits to doing a lot of repeat performances in the Northeast.

“It feels like we’re on a mission to spread the word about families,” Lisa says. “Families exist that love each other and spend time together that aren’t on a very upsetting reality show. We’re the opposite of everything that’s on TV.”

She continues, “There really are not families that get along very well and have a rocking out time together [on TV shows]. That’s the difference between us and stuff that’s in our market.”

The band is approaching its 10th year and Emily became a part of the band about five years ago. It came about pretty organically — instead of just giving her parents ideas about songs, she wrote the chorus of “Rock Girl.” Now she plays five instruments.

“It’s been a solid five years of ‘we are a band and we just happen to be a family,’” Lisa says.

Although her parents started the band for her, Emily says it’s her job too now. She wants to be the person who says that you, as a child, don’t have to grow up so fast.

Lisa and Billy were inspired to start the band when Emily was about 6, and she was dancing provocatively to pop music. “That was a huge thing for us as parents,” Lisa says. “We wanted to provide music that was just like what was on the radio, but without those lyrics. “We’re filling the void between Barney and Britney.”
