Review of Hope Harris’ Picasso, That’s Who!

Take a trip to the Louvre and back with Hope Harris’ Picasso, That’s Who!

Harris’ songs lead young listeners through a virtual gallery of famous artists using bluegrass, funk and some retro rock ’n’ roll along the way.

Each of Harris’ songs showcases a different artist and style of painting ranging from Picasso to Monet. The album’s catchy songs were easy enough for my 4-year-old son to understand and deep enough to have him wanting to know more about the paintings behind the lyrics.

In “A-C-T-I-O-N” Harris encourages little artists to get wild and frenetic like Jackson Pollack. The sweet soothing waltz about Georgia O’Keefe almost lulled my toddler daughter to sleep in the car … almost.

The song lyrics read like kid-sized lessons in art appreciation. I have to admit the album had me and my husband scrambling for our smart phones to brush up on the art of David Hockney and Romare Bearden.

This album is an art teacher’s dream with the overall message encouraging kids to experiment with different kinds of art. Harris spent time on Broadway and in Nashville honing her musical chops and she brings all that musical experience to her songwriting. Once she became the mother of two sons, Harris turned her focus to keeping them and kids everywhere entertained.
